Neighbors, Family, and Community

For 20 years, I have patronized my Lewisville 7-ELEVEN store and bought my morning coffee. I can’t start my day off right without getting my coffee from this particular store in my neighborhood.

Through the years I’ve gotten to know the clerks; they’ve watched my children grow and I've seen some of them fight and survive health crises. I’ve seen new employees come and go, but the same original team remains. There’s something about community. There’s something about familiarity. Family is not limited to the people in your house.

People will sometimes will ask me why I haven’t moved out of this neighborhood, which is a Title I feeder pattern - meaning it is economically diverse but leaning disadvantaged... there is no question in my mind. I’ve stayed in this community because I am part of it and it is part of me.

I take it personally when customers come into this establishment without wearing a mask because it puts my community and my neighbors at risk.

As such, it’s not uncommon to find me handing out free masks to people who enter this store. The store where my family works.
